Individual Practice and Preparation - No Sleep Til' Brooklyn

 Individual practice and preparation

What practical preparation do you do before playing the song? E.g. sourced lead sheets ,tabs, chord charts or notation; listened to songs on playlists; notated/learnt riffs by ear; selected correct equipment; took care of your voice with correct warm-up; made sure parts were allocated sensibly by instrument/ability etc

Before playing the song I had to choose a rap song, section it off for which part of the song I wanted to sing and learn that part for the performance. What I did to prepare was just listen to my section on repeat and practice is slow and fast because rapping is like a tongue twister.

What musical preparation did you do? E.g. learning appropriate scales, riffs or rhythms; technical exercises to develop accuracy/speed; tone production; recording yourself and checking against original recordings

I had to make sure my timing was right so as well as practicing with my band I practiced on my own with a backing track and without because I needed to make sure I was not rushing or dragging.

How did you help to develop the song? E.g. working out chords and harmonies from lead sheets; exploring different chord voicings; practicing improvisation and solos; writing parts, lyrics, arrangement ideas and working out stylistic textures.

I made sure to get 1 verse and 1 chorus in my section even though in the original it isn't like that, the chorus is too iconic to not to include. I also made sure the other singers knew when to come in on certain bits so the song sounded more full.

What role did you take in the band? E.g. musical director/workshop leader; taking sectionals; taking direction; responding to feedback

I was just another team mate like I obviously had responsibility on my song and learning it and helping others with certain bits. I also made sure I could come in on certain bits in the other songs because its a team effort and they deserve my help if they are helping me.

and my band members song and also my own rap solo.

Rehearsal and development

What kind of performance situation was this? (Rehearsal, gig, recording, video shoot, audition etc.)

This task was a rap battle task where my class was put into 3 different bands and we had to perform 4 snippets of different rap songs each. We were not allowed any notation because the rap battle would be recorded and put onto YouTube.

What were the stylistic traits for the other players/instruments in your band

One of the coolest stylistic traits of my band was one of my band members decided to do a Cantonese rap being her first language it made her more passionate about it. The instrumentalists however had to interpret their own take on the song because finding actual notation for the song was impossible but it added an additional challenge for them to overcome and in the end it was successful.

How did you decide on your aims and objectives?

Once we decided on all the songs we all went away and learnt them at home, then in our rehearsals we just practiced like we were in the actual performance so we got an idea on how it would flow.

Give two examples of how you listened to each others opinions

One example on how I listened to someone's opinion was when one of the singers told me I have to not just sing and I need to perform it because rap is fun and upbeat and my body language needs to match the vibe. Another example was when one of my friends encouraged me to take a lead rap because originally I was more hesitant even though I knew I wanted too so her words helped me feel more confident.

How did you decide on order of solos, cues, key, lyrics, arrangement and improvisation?

Deciding on solos was tough because it was such a fun task everyone wanted to rap but some instrumentalists knew that they were better off on an instrument to help the band and we knew some singers didn't know how to play an instrument. We decided on the order on which songs were good to open with because it was a "battle" the order would effect how we did because if we ended more tame that would be thew last thing people would remember.

I had an idea that I'd be singing for this performance anyways so I didn't waste time learning it on an instrument I wouldn't be playing. What musical preparation did you do? E.g. learning appropriate scales, riffs or rhythms; technical exercises to develop accuracy/speed; tone production; recording yourself and checking against original recordings. - When the parts got split up I just tried to remember my lines and the chorus, so trying to memorize when they come in and settling on how high and low I am singing. ...

For me because I was on percussion I had to pay close attention to cues because there was some more intracule instruments that had key parts. What musical preparation did you do? E.g. learning appropriate scales, riffs or rhythms; technical exercises to develop accuracy/speed; tone production; recording yourself and checking against original recordings.  I didn't take any percussion home and I didn't have as big as a part of others i...

Those songs were Salty Dog blues by Earl Scruggs, A Boy Named Sue by Johnny Cash and American Honky Tonk Association by Garth Brooks. We where allowed to use lyric sheets in the performance and because I decided to just do singing I spent my time listening to the songs and getting familiar with the structure.
